Hands-On History: Volunteer to Save Our Fraternal Heritage
Fraternal organizations have played a vital role in shaping communities. Yet, much of this rich history is at risk of being lost due to neglect, lack of awareness, and the natural passage of time. This talk will empower members to take simple, practical steps to safeguard their lodge’s history before it disappears. From identifying and preserving important records to implementing basic conservation practices, attendees will leave with actionable strategies to protect their fraternal heritage.

Dr. Heather K. Calloway is currently serving as the Executive Director of University Collections at Indiana University. Her position has broad responsibility for the stewardship of IU’s myriad collections, consistent with the university’s teaching, research, and service missions. In 2022, her team opened a new teaching, research and exhibit space in the renovated historic McCalla School in Bloomington, Indiana. This innovative space facilitates interaction with artifacts and historical items from IU's extensive collections, fostering collaboration among students, scholars, and the local community.

Heather’s expertise lies in the preservation of fraternal and religious memorabilia. In 2021, she founded the Center for Fraternal Collections & Research at Indiana University, dedicated to documenting the history and material culture of underrepresented fraternal groups. Her work also explores novel approaches to engaging diverse audiences with primary sources, including the integration of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Research for Anyone
Learn how to contribute to Masonic research by taking seemingly simple tasks and data points to completion. By being every bit as mundane as this sounds, you can reveal meaningful stories. Once there, you get to decide if you want to elevate those stories into greatness by challenging the status quo.

Daniel Gardiner was made a Mason in 2001, inspired by the Masonic funeral service for his cousin, Ira Gardiner.

Daniel is a two-time Past Master of Idaho Lodge No. 1, which was formerly Idaho Lodge No. 35 under the Grand Lodge of Oregon, and which helped form Idaho’s Grand Lodge. He is also a Past Master of Helena Lodge No. 3, which was formerly Helena Lodge No. 10 under the Grand Lodge of Colorado, and which helped form the Grand Lodge of Montana. In 2017 he was appointed and then elected Grand Secretary in the Grand Lodge of Montana.

Historical Context and the Fraternal Experience

The mysterious literature and objects associated with fraternal orders have attracted members and non- members alike. However, a wealth of knowledge lies beyond the patchwork of sensational lore. Academic interest in these organizations has increased for several decades, emphasizing their critical social and cultural influence. How can members interpret this history?

Using examples curated from the collection of the Oakland Scottish Rite, historian Adam Kendall will examine the fascination with Masonic material culture and provide tools for exploring them within a broader historical context.

Adam Kendall is the executive director of the Oakland Scottish Rite Historical Foundation. A past master of San Francisco’s Phoenix Lodge No. 144, he holds full membership in the world’s premier lodge of research, Quatuor Coronati No. 2076 (English Constitution.)

For nearly two decades, Adam has worked in various roles promoting the study of Masonic history and fraternal material culture. From 2013–2015, he served as the Masonic Library and Museum Association president and was the collections manager for the Henry W. Coil Library and Museum of Freemasonry from 2007–2016. He is the editor of Heredom, published by the Scottish Rite Research Society, and serves as the 2024–2026 President of the Philalethes Society. He is also a member of the Society of Blue Friars, established in 1932 to recognize Masonic authors.
